An Optimal Choice for Small Teams
GEM2 was designed for developing realistic squad-based RTS games with action elements and cinematic story sequences rendered in real time by the engine. A dozen projects were built on GEM2. The engine is now retired.
GEM2 is an evolutionary iteration of GEM1, designed for the development of realistic RTS games with action elements, hybrid unit control, and real time in engine cinematic sequences.
GEM2 preserves the component based architecture of the previous engine while extending its capabilities through:
- improved simulation of physical object interaction and a more detailed damage system;
- rendering with support for Phong materials using specular and normal maps, along with LOD systems and post processing effects;
- tactical unit AI with support for squad behavior models, morale systems, and an improved pathfinding formula for different unit types across various terrain types;
- expanded game component editing tools, including support for functions and variables in scripts, built in logging, debugging, and visual profiling tools;
- multiplayer infrastructure with session configuration and new game modes;
- the ability to deliver additional content in separate packages, enabling long term game expansion through DLC and community created modifications.
GEM2 is particularly effective for projects where realistic simulation, convincing damage visualization, and a wide range of gameplay mechanics need to be combined.
The engine is accessible for teams of any size, as most game components are described in human readable text files, allowing content to be created without programming and changes to be tested quickly.
