A tactical RTS with a high level of battlefield interactivity. It is aimed at players who enjoy military strategy and action games with direct unit control. The game takes place during the final stage of WWII and includes campaigns for the Allies, the USSR, and Germany. Players take part in historical battles such as the Normandy landings, the assault on Berlin, and Germany’s defensive operations.
The game continues the direction established in Soldiers: Heroes of World War II and expands it through several systems introduced with the GEM2 engine. Updated graphics and sound make combat denser and more reactive. The game pays close attention to visual detail, from worn fabric on a soldier’s sleeve to rivets and scratches on tank armor. Special effects add weight to the battlefield! Artillery leaves craters, debris flies across the terrain, buildings collapse under fire, and tanks can break through ice and disappear into freezing water.
Urban ruins, forest roads, bridges, and trenches are form a living battlefield where most objects can be destroyed or used as cover. Bullets and shells follow ballistic trajectories. Shell casings scatter from blast waves. Helmets fall. Fragments of destroyed objects fly in all directions, changing cover, visibility, and movement during combat.
Faces of War introduces a new philosophy of troop control. The player can switch at any moment from squad commands to direct control of a unit, from sniper fire to anti-tank shots at weak armor.
The main technological achievement of Faces of War is the realistic simulation of unit “brain”. Unlike classic RTS games built around fixed scripts, each soldier acts according to what he sees, hears, and remembers. Units react to noise and movement, choose which weapon to use, flee from grenades, assist each other, and use cover. The absence of a centralized “brain” makes the behavior of both enemies and allies natural. Combined with the interactive environment, this creates vivid, unpredictable battles with high mission variability and replayability.
